Eye Cup WIP With Eyes and Weed

Finished version of Eye Cup #18

This is Eye Cup #18.  I had some difficulty fitting all the eyes and leaves into an organized pattern so the pattern is not so neat.  Also, the handle came out a little weird.  I hope it's able to support the cup.

Seated Cthulhu #1

A few months ago I received a commission for a seated Cthulhu and was given this as an idea of what he wanted.  This was what I came up with and then decided I couldn't sell it for the $20 budget of the commission and made a second one that I felt fit the price better (not an inferior piece, but less detailed).

This is based on a design for a papercraft Cthulhu by paper engineer Phillip Fickling.

 

Lovecraft's original Elder Sign is inscribed on the sides and August Derleth's version is on the back.  There is also some mysterious fake lettering on the front:

Eye Cup 17 WIP

Finished version of Eye Cup #17

This is Eye Cup #17.  I had an experience a few days ago in which I started to make a few new cups and then got frustrated with the handles and tore them down.  I would normally be disturbed by this (although it was a minimal time investment and no clay was wasted), but this seems to happen at the beginning of every build cycle.  I rebuilt the two cups last night and realized I could form them from one large slab of clay rather than strips of slabs as I've been doing up to now.

Small Chamsas With Metallic Paints

I had a bowl of unfinished one-inch chamsas leftover from last year.  I bought some metallic acrylic paints and finished painting them.

Tooth Cup 2 WIP

This is another tooth pot. This one is meant to be a coffee mug.  I attempted to follow human dentition faithfully.  I ran out of room for the lower wisdom teeth, so I guess this pot has had "The Operation."  Also, I decided to make the lower teeth the same size as the uppers, although in reality they're smaller.

Chatterer Pot

This pot was inspired by a character in Clive Barker's film Hellraiser.  Hellraiser is about a cube-shaped puzzle which opens the door to another dimension and summons a quartet of Cenobites, S&M angel-demons which mock and torment whomever solved the puzzle.  The Cenobites are ghoulishly mutilated and pierced.  One of them has a blank, burned face with nothing but a prominent mouth stretched open with metal hooks with teeth which incessantly chatter, hence its name The Chatterer.

Most of the pot is glazed, with silver acrylic paint on the hooks.

Chamsa 118

This is the revised (reglazed) version of Chamsa 118.

Desert Mistletoe Menorah

This is a slab-built ceramic menorah decorated with impressions of desert mistletoe, Phoradendron californicum.

Eye Cup #16, With Ants

This is Eye Cup 16.  I meant to make black and red ants, but the kiln underfired and the red/plum glaze came out pink.  So there are three pink ants, three black ants, and eleven eyes.

There is also an extra eye and extra ant on the inside of the cup.

Cannabis Menorah 2

This is my second Cannabis Menorah.  (Here's the first one.) This one has seven Cannabis leaves of various sizes.

Seated Tardigrade on Monster Sofa

The tardigrades (water bears, moss piglets) are known for their unique ability to survive in a vacuum.  They are not well known for their ability to assume a seated posture and I think the awkwardness of a tardigrade attempting to sit on a couch is captured well in this piece.

Eris: Rude But Mirthful WIP

Finished version of Eris Idol #1

In addition to my Cthulhu idols, which I hope to have placed in every home in Arizona by 2017, I wanted to make some religious statues of Eris, the Greek goddess of chaos.  Unfortunately, that means attempting to sculpt something that actually looks human and I was out sick with rickets for that month in art school.  

Here is my first attempt (image 1).  It's based on this simple and horrific plastic angel girl which was probably intended as a Christmas tree ornament (image 2).  I tried to combine it with this image of Eris from D'aulaires' Book of Greek Myths, my favorite book on the subject from my childhood (image 3).  I'm also including an image of the Statue of Liberty (image 4) to differentiate between Eris' hairstyle and the Statue of Liberty's.

98╣   Eris:  Rude But Mirthful

Floating/flying down a river.  I stopped to pick up A.F., who was in an apartment with her friends eating bad noodles and had them all over her face.  We went to a party.  Eris was there.  She was very short, with hair dyed bluish-black and a cruel smirk on her face.  There was a loud band playing, made up of goth kids and school board members pretending to French kiss each other.  Eris is rude but mirthful.

Cat Head 4 WIP

I continued with my new series of cat heads.  The commission was for an aberrant cat head that can be hung up.  You can't tell from the photo, but this cat head can be hung up.
