Aberrant Ceramics is the artwork of Aaron Nosheny, potter and ceramic artist based in Tucson, Arizona. Self-taught and neurodivergent, he has worked in stoneware clay since 2004. He makes non-traditional forms in a medium built on tradition, exploring the overlap between wonder and revulsion. Subject matter includes sympathetic monsters, insects, opossums, fast food mascots, and Halloween kitsch.

I am in love with my medium. I love the process of frantically birthing clay monstrosities, subjecting them to an epic trial by fire, and sending them out into the world.

R'lyeh Pot

Based on a collage image which was based on a dream about seeing Elvis performing Beatles songs live, Octopus's Garden in this case.  R'lyeh, where the hip young people are free to just be themselves.

Octohalos/Can-tahs

These were inspired by the cursed magic items in Stephen King's novel Desperation.  They were intended for the Strength Tarot card, but I'm probably not going to use them.

Elder Sign Stamps

August Derleth's version of the Elder Sign from the Lovecraft stories.  Lovecraft's version was a simpler, plant-inspired design.

Wall Cthulhoids With Various Glazes

This is what survived of the set of Wall Cthulhoids using various glazes.  Several of them broke in the kiln.

Jade Green Wall Cthulhoids

A few years ago, I made a series of Cthulhoid Wall Hangings traced from symmetrical paper cut outs.  I sold out of them (all four of them).  I had kept the paper cut outs, so I made two more sets of them, a few in jade green like the originals and a few with different glazes.

Cthulhu Figures from 2006

I posted tiny images of these figures in this blog post from 2006.  The photography is crappy and I seem to have had a very different sense of humor than I do now.  This is an update with better images and no visible body parts.

Jenkin

I've been carrying around a squeaking toy rat in my backpack for a few years and I finally found a use for it: as a model for this piece.  I was thinking of naming it after Brown Jenkin, the rat familiar with human features from H.P. Lovecraft's story "Dreams in the Witch House."  I ended up glazing it with a glaze called "Pussywillow," which comes out grayish when applied lightly, so he's just Jenkin rather than Brown Jenkin.

Flat Cthulhu Figure

Along with the American Gothic farmer faces and the cat people, I made a flat Cthulhu figure.

Wall Cthulhoids

This is a set of four flat Cthulhu objects and one squid object to be hung on the wall.  The Cthulhoids were made by cutting out symmetrical Cthulhu paper dolls and tracing them on clay.
