Pages

Aberrant Ceramics is the artwork of Aaron Nosheny, potter and ceramic artist based in Tucson, Arizona. Self-taught and neurodivergent, he has worked in stoneware clay since 2004. He makes non-traditional forms in a medium built on tradition, exploring the overlap between wonder and revulsion. Subject matter includes sympathetic monsters, insects, opossums, fast food mascots, and Halloween kitsch.

I am in love with my medium. I love the process of frantically birthing clay monstrosities, subjecting them to an epic trial by fire, and sending them out into the world.

Skull Chair / Ceramic Bone Throne Sculpture

Ceramic skull chair sculpture (“Bone Throne”) by Aberrant Ceramics.

This ceramic skull chair sculpture is a handmade “bone throne” that reimagines the human cranium as macabre furniture.
Highly detailed yet eerie and primitive, it features reaching skeletal hands as armrests and a ribbed lower jaw that forms a hollowed-out seat.

The Origin Story
This design is a modern ceramic evolution of a piece of my own history. It is based on a large plywood skull my father created for our family’s basement haunted house in 1984. I've included an image of the original in the photos. The tradition was to invite the whole neighborhood to tour our haunted basement. This piece is also inspired by vintage Halloween decorations. I loved the distorted, non-anatomically correct skull imagery in these decorations and that pleasing distortion is also reflected in this piece.

The forehead and temples are covered in intricate, hand-carved scrolled patterns that bridge the gap between biology and architecture. Glazed with stark but glossy black and white glazes.

While a standalone art piece, it serves as a perfect "Bone Throne" for small figures, dolls, or as the centerpiece of a curated cabinet of curiosities.

Dimensions & Specs
Size: Approx. 2.5 x 2.5 in. base | 7.5 in. height.

Weight: 26 oz

My family's Halloween decorations circa 1984-1985. I love non-anatomically-correct skull illustrations on Halloween decorations.

Mission Statement

By sending my Skull Chair to its forever home, I want to send out encouragement to the spooky peoples of the world. I want to encourage the weird kids to create. I want to encourage the building of DIY family haunted houses. I want to break the stronghold of mass produced T*mu/W*lmart/Ama*on "art" and to encourage the creation of handmade art. I want to encourage the expanded and enlightened use of the ceramic medium to produce a variety of forms unhindered by tradition. I want to bring spooky joy to people's living spaces. I want to bring the unique DIY spirit of the Nosheny basement haunted house to everyone who needs it.

Ten-Eyed Monster Chair

This is part of my monster chair series, which began with Chairy from Pee-Wee's Playhouse and drifted from there.

Seated Tardigrade on Monster Sofa

The tardigrades (water bears, moss piglets) are known for their unique ability to survive in a vacuum.  They are not well known for their ability to assume a seated posture and I think the awkwardness of a tardigrade attempting to sit on a couch is captured well in this piece.

Chair 3

This is Chair 3:  The Toothy Loveseat.  After it was bisque fired, I realized I wouldn't be able to adequately glaze the inside of the mouth.  Next time, I'll use black slip.

Green Sofa Sculpture with Giant Luminous Eyes

Chair 2: Sofa/Couch ceramic sculpture with giant, luminous eyes by Aberrant Ceramics/Aaron Nosheny

My Chairy sculpture is off to the auction block and I undertook a project to produce more chair sculptures without worrying about having to imitate a preexisting model.

Someone is selling this piece on Ebay.

Speaking of Chairs

If have a friend who works for a museum in Tucson called La Pilita.  The museum is holding an auction to raise funds and for some reason the theme is chairs.  Most of the donations are real chairs painted by local artisans.  My friend asked me to donate this clay interpretation of Chairy from Pee-Wee's Playhouse.  Here are the two photos she posted to Facebook.

My only complaint is that the piece is described as "Chairy Chair," which makes my skin crawl.  Chairy needs no appelation.

I started a new series of clay chairs.  This is the first one.

The Friendly, Nurturing, Female Presence of Chairy

Chairy was a furniture-character on Paul Reubens' Saturday morning TV show from the eighties, Pee-Wee's Playhouse. On the show, Chairy was a friendly, nurturing, female presence amidst the various screaming chaos nightmare creatures in the Playhouse household. Her antithesis was a dog-shaped chair named Dog Chair.

My interpretation of Chairy came out a little scarier than I was expecting. If I were Pee-Wee Herman, I don't think I would trust this Chairy to cradle my buttocks.

The real Chairy. Now there's a piece of sentient furniture you can trust your ass with.

This crude object is the Chairy Color Test Owl.
