Aberrant Ceramics is the artwork of Aaron Nosheny, potter and ceramic artist based in Tucson, Arizona. Self-taught and neurodivergent, he has worked in stoneware clay since 2004. He makes non-traditional forms in a medium built on tradition, exploring the overlap between wonder and revulsion. Subject matter includes sympathetic monsters, insects, opossums, fast food mascots, and Halloween kitsch.

I am in love with my medium. I love the process of frantically birthing clay monstrosities, subjecting them to an epic trial by fire, and sending them out into the world.

Earth Elemental Minis

I made these in 2012 when I was DMing D&D Encounters at a game store.  The story was The Elder Elemental Eye and interest was waning so I didn't get to use them and they have sat on my shelf unglazed for 6 years.  Now, finally, the internet can bask in the glory of my glazed earth elementals.

Tick Mug

Berkeley Breathed/Opus the Penguin said it best:  "It's a Faustian nightmare!  Some blood-gorged little demon from hell sucking the very soul from my being!"

Apple Spirit Mug

I encountered the Apple Spirit as an avatar of Eris while walking around the woods stoned at night in suburban Pennsylvania.

Brittle Star Pot

This is another relic of my freelance tutoring experience.  While the 12-year-old student wasted time, I read about echinoderms and planned pottery projects.

The Mermaid and the Ammonite Pot

The mermaid holding a shell was on a notebook belonging to a student I was tutoring.  The ammonite and boobs are my additions.

Eye Jug

Venting:

  • The plum glaze is coming out light pink.  I think I diluted it too much.
  • This pot was intended for another project but I wasn't happy with the shape so I added some eyes rather than going through the trouble of recycling the clay.  I now have a reliable system for recycling clay at my home studio.
